After Michael Jackson’s passing in 2009, many of us remained active in the worldwide Michael Jackson fan community, but things inevitably felt different. The excitement of looking forward to a new Michael Jackson event, concert, album or simply the possibility of seeing Michael again was suddenly gone.
Over the years, however, Michael’s music and legacy continued to reach millions of people. Whatever your opinion of the Michael Jackson Estate, credit is due for some remarkable projects that have helped keep his work alive, from the This Is It movie and the Xscape album to the Cirque du Soleil productions, Michael Jackson ONE and the various stage musicals.
Then came the Michael Jackson biopic, and with it another realization: a whole new generation of Michael Jackson fans has discovered his music and legacy.
Many of these fans never had the opportunity to see Michael Jackson perform live, attend a fan gathering while he was alive, experience the excitement surrounding a new album, or meet other fans who shared the same passion.
That is one of the reasons MJ Memories was created.
MJ Memories is about bringing Michael Jackson fans together, celebrating his music and remembering the moments that made being a fan so special. We want to create opportunities for fans, both longtime supporters and newer generations, to meet, listen to Michael’s music and simply enjoy being together.
We have organized Michael Jackson fan events in the past, so creating another event felt like a natural next step.
Of course, organizing an event takes time, planning and the right venue. And sometimes, unexpected things happen.
Michael himself certainly gave his fans plenty of experience with unexpected moments.
I still remember travelling to London after hearing that Michael would be there. The excitement was incredible. But the moment I landed, the news came through: Michael wasn’t there.
Something similar happened with Pavarotti & Friends. Many of Michael’s most dedicated fans were there, hoping to see him.
And then there was Michael’s security team.
Seeing members of Michael’s security was enough to make everyone excited, because it was often a pretty good indication that Michael might show up.
Those moments, the anticipation, the excitement, the travelling, the waiting and being surrounded by other Michael Jackson fans, became memories in themselves.
And that is what MJ Memories is ultimately about: memories.
We cannot recreate the past, and we cannot bring Michael back. But we can continue to celebrate his music, share our stories and create new memories together.
More stories from those incredible years will be shared in another MJ Memories.
For now, we want to thank everyone who continues to support Michael Jackson, his music and the worldwide fan community.
We hope to see you soon at another MJ Memories event.
Until then, keep dancing, keep singing, keep Moonwalking, keep Michaeling, and don’t forget to Heal the World.
Peace.
