The day I bought dangerous

The Netherlands | November 26th, 1991

I knew the new album would be out very soon. The media was anticipating its release, and the Black or White video was about to premiere.

There were headlines and mixed reviews, but I didn’t care about any of that.

As a typical teenager, my interests varied, but then a friend told me, “The album is on sale today!”

There was just one small problem: I needed the money. Fortunately, my mother gave it to me, so I ran to the music store.

Wow, the in-store displays looked amazing! I saw the beautiful black first pressing of the Dangerous CD with its stunning 3D artwork. What a fantastic design.

Being a kid with limited money and only a cassette player, I bought the cassette version instead.

It was after school, just before the store closed.

First, we had dinner with the family. I was a little grumpy because I had to wait even longer to hear the new songs.

Then came another problem: no batteries for my Walkman. The shops were already closed, so there was no chance of buying any.

But luckily, I had a brainwave. The TV remote control! I quickly borrowed the batteries from it.

Finally, it was bedtime, and I was ready to listen to Michael’s new album. As you may remember, cassettes had an A-side and a B-side.

It was late, and I was lying in bed listening to the songs. At first, I kept the volume low, but with each song I turned it up a little more.

Suddenly, the cassette stopped.

Okay, eject, flip it over, and press play.

Then I heard: bang, bang, bang!

Aaaah!

I jumped up immediately, convinced that my father was banging on my bedroom door. I even mumbled a quick “Sorry!”

But there was only silence...

Huh?

When I rewound the tape, I realized it was part of the music, and I couldn't stop laughing.

What an opening for Black or White!
