1977 February 28th | Countdown: Interview with Molly Meldrum

Molly: This time around I found a little guy, there’s a monster on the charts and his name is Michael Jackson. Michael, welcome to Countdown.

Michael: Thank you!

Molly: A new single it’s been released in Australia this week will going places and already a monster on the American charts, can you tell us a little bit about that single?

Michael: Uhm… it was recorded in Philadelphia, written by Gamble and Huff and uhm… we… we really enjoy doing it and it’s title song to the album it’s called “Going places”, and eh… be getting it sold and it’s doing very well here.

Molly: Now tell me, what do you thing is the success of the Jacksons, yourself and the Jackson 5?

Michael: I’d say probably togetherness or uhm… just enjoying our work a lot, a lot of love into it, all our efforts.

Molly: You’ve sprung up a bit since I saw you last, uhm…

Michael: Everybody has, yeah

Molly: How have you taken it over the last five years, I mean-

Michael: Success?

Molly: Yeah

Michael: Uhm…

Molly: Has affected you much?

Michael: In… in a joyful way, and eh… rejoicing way, cause I love it. And you have to like to be in it this long.

Molly: Yeah

Michael: Or you’d go crazy, it’s so much, we’d been traveling the world and making records and just having a great time.

Molly: Well now, when I, when you are in Australia and I remember we actually presented you with the footage, you at that stage were sort of growing a little because you had a few lectures to do, you had to keep up with the skill work and things like that. Uhm… do you regret having to keep up with the skill work?

Michael: No, I enjoy it, I love to read and learn and all that stuff, yeah.

Molly: Now all in Australia we have seen you many off the big shows like, like, the big Music Awards and things like that.

Michael: Oh yeah

Molly: And your little sister has been on a few of them.

Michael: Oh yes

Molly: she’s a funky little sister

Michael: [Laughing loud] She is funky

Molly: She’s amazing

Michael: [Laughing high]

Molly: But uhm… I mean the demand on you has been amazing, sort of- as far as- like you’ve had to go in an adult world more or less, I mean did you find that hard to cope with money?

Michael: You mean as far as our music?

Molly: Yeah, and the demand as far as you having to go on all these shows and-and-and sort of really compete against the adults as far as hosting things and things like that?

Michael: Oh, no it has been part of the business, and eh… it comes at you all the times, it’s up to you whether you wanna do it or not, so uhm… we do whatever we can.

Molly: Now it’s almost ironical that-that-that you are a star in the Wiz, the-the film of the Wiz, and-and playing opposite or with the lady that really discovers you, Diana Ross.

Michael: aha

Molly: Uhm… what was it- well- how did you feel when you heard you got the part in the Wiz? And especially playing with Diana Ross?

Michael: I was uhm… very happy because uh…well I love to play so much; I’ve seen it six times before I even know I was gonna be in it. And uhm… I would talk to Diana on the phone, I say: “You’re gonna film the Wiz next week huh. or… or… next month?” She would say next thing I noticed was I was in it, and they called me if I wanted to do it, I said yeah. So, they sent the script, I came up, met everybody.

Molly: What part are you playing in the Wiz?

Michael: Scarecrow

Molly: The scarecrow?

Michael: [Smiling] Yeah! I love it too

Molly: And so- have you started filming that yet?

Michael: Yes, we’ve been filming about two months and a half.

Molly: Yeah

Michael: We have about four months to go

Molly: Well, this concert that- as I say has been- is becoming a huge hit in the States and no doubt will be in a hit in Australia called “Going Places” I think the one thing over the past five years since I’ve seen you, Michael Jackson certainly going to places.

Michael: Yes, Thank you

Molly: Thanks for being on the show

Michael: Thank you
